What Are Steel Look Windows?

The History

The first steel windows were manufactured by Francis Henry Crittall, who took over the Braintree based CRITTALL® window business from his brother in 1884. The distinctive steel windows were hugely popular after the First World War when there was a demand for quality, durable windows. One of the major problems with using steel as the framework for windows can be the prohibitive cost. Compared to using aluminium as the framework, other potential hurdles to overcome when considering steel are thermal compliance to current Building Regulations and very long lead times.

Why aluminium?

The period style of steel look windows created with metal grid like frames offering an industrial and heritage look have become increasingly popular and can now be manufactured in alternative cost-effective materials. The best alternative to steel windows are made from strong lightweight, rustproof aluminium that mimic the style of steel in aluminium. Steel look aluminium windows look very similar to their Steel counterparts but offer several benefits of being aluminium. Take a look at some of them here.

The Benefits

Made from durable powder-coated aluminium, steel-look windows make use of astragal bars and horizontal couplers that can be stacked to create the authentic grid-like appearance that is
increasingly popular in today’s market. The product, however, is not limited to just heritage or listed buildings. It can be found in all types of modern renovations, used both externally and internally by those who are looking for the traditional art-deco appearance they provide.

Importantly it is worth noting that aluminium steel look windows are not a direct replacement for elegant classic steel windows, but they do offer a lot of similarities at a fraction of the cost of steel. The doors are extremely low maintenance, ensuring they are easy to look after. The only thing that needs to be done is clean them with a damp cloth and sopay water, ensuring they look as good as new.

The aluminium profiles utilise an innovative polyamide thermal break, creating a barrier between the cold air outside and the warm air inside. Much the same as other advanced aluminium glazing systems on the market, the use of this technology drastically reduces the risk of any thermal transmittance and enhances the overall performance of the windows and doors. With the correct usage of glass, the products can achieve a U Value to meet the requirements of the Approved Document L 2010.
