How To Install Aluminium Windows Step by Step

Aluminium windows are growing in popularity thanks to their sustainability and durability during tough weather conditions. You might wonder how they are installed, so in this article, we will give you step by step instructions on how to install them. Read on to find out more.

Site Surveying

To ensure a good quality installation of your aluminium windows, good surveying is essential. The surveyor must be fully trained in window and doors installation methods and in the manufacturers recommendations for the specific system which is being used. The following must take place within the site survey.

Establish Customer Requirements

Firstly, the surveyor needs to confirm with the customer whether the window is to be inward or outward opening and assess any special specification requirements. The surveyor should then advise of hardware options and establish the purchaser’s requirements.

It is essential to comply with building regulations so it is advisable to record the style of the window or doors being replaced along with the size of any opening lights. These can be recorded through images and witnessed by the customer.  It is the responsibility of the surveyor to inform the customer of enhancements which can be made in terms of security. Such as a restriction device on outward opening doors. It is also essential to consider whether outward opening windows affect pedestrians or anyone walking by

Assess the Area for Suitability

Defects around the structural opening must be checked for by the surveyor and if any are found then the purchaser must be notified, and a subsequent agreement made about who is responsible for rectifying the defects prior to installation.

Now you are ready to install, here is a step by step guide on how to do it.

1. Check The Measurements

To get started, first double-check that the measurements of your window match the space you have in the wall to install it. Make sure you check both the length and height. At this stage, pre-drill holes into the top, middle, and bottom of each reveal – this will make it easier when you come to attach the window to the wall.

2. Positioning And Levelling

Once you’re confident that your window is the right size, it’s time to get it into place. You’ll probably need at least two other people on the inside and outside of the building to help you with this. Once the window is in position, use a spirit level on the window ledge to check that it’s flat and adjust as needed. One helpful tip is to use packers to adjust the level rather than completely removing and reinserting the window.

3. Make Sure It’s Flush

Once the window is level, make sure it is flush against the inner wall. Place a set square against the wall and then push from either the inside or outside until the window fits flush with the wall. Now the window is in the correct position to be attached.

4. Attach The First Side

Using the holes you drilled in the reveal, drill in three screws so that one side of the window is fully attached to the wall. Use the set square to ensure the window stays flush with the wall as you do this. Once one side is in place, you shouldn’t need extra support to hold up the window.

5. Onto the Second Side

You can attach the second side of the window in the same way you did the first. Before drilling in the screws, check for gaps between the window and the wall. If gaps are present, fill them with packers before you start drilling. Packers can be gently tapped into the gap using a hammer.

Final Touches

Once all sides of the reveal are attached to the wall, check and pack any remaining gaps. Remember to snap off the ends of any packers you use so that they are invisible. Once the aluminium window is fully installed, give it a clean and your work is complete.
