How Secure Are Sash Windows?

One of the most frequently asked questions we are asked about sash windows is whether they are safe. There is a common misconception that sash windows do not offer the same level of home security as other alternatives, but this simply is not true. In fact, in some ways, they offer enhanced security!

Window Furniture for Additional Security

Sash windows feature all of the same advanced home security features as other windows, including industry-leading locking mechanisms and a discreet anti jemmy bar for additional protection.

What makes sash windows that bit more secure is that, unlike other windows that have a tilting operation, they feature sash stops which are fitted to the top of the window to securely lock them when they are closed and when they are ajar so that they cannot be forced open. This promotes better ventilation without compromising security.

Here are some other ways to secure your sash windows

Opening Restrictors

Opening restrictors are essential to improve the security of your windows and the safety of your family. Opening restrictors can be installed on your windows to limit the distance your sash windows are able to open. This is an excellent safety device and not only keeps you children and pets safe from falling out of the windows, but it also restricts the opening space for a potential intruder trying to climb in. Nothing like adding a window feature that has multiple functions.

Dual Screws

Dual Screws fit most sash windows and offer added security as the screw can only be removed by the use of a key. Quite simply, dual screws secure the two window frames together to prevent opening completely. These are effective security measures to take when you are going on holiday and want to ensure your windows are properly locked and secured.

Window Catches

Window Catches are ideal for sash windows as they can prevent the lower sash window from lifting any higher than a couple of inches. Not only does this add security to your home by preventing a potential thief from entering your home, it allows for effective ventilation and is a much safer option if you have small children around.

Deadbolts

This type of lock bolts through the top and bottom sashes to prevent the window from opening. The bolt is then removed with a key that comes included with the lock to permit the window to be opened. The dual screws will lock the sashes into place to prevent them from sliding, even when the fastener is compromised.

Glazing Bars

One of the simplest and most affordable solutions for how to burglar-proof windows is to install bars on the exterior of the windows. These bars keep would-be thieves from being able to gain access to the window to force it open or break the glass.
