Are Aluminium Doors Sustainable?

Product strength, ease of fabrication and minimal maintenance are just a few of the multiple benefits that aluminium doors have to offer. But are they considered sustainable?

Well, aluminium is regarded as one of the most sustainable materials in the world, with endless recycling possibilities. Its durable and energy-efficient qualities make it an excellent choice for both fabricators and homeowners.

Why Is Sustainability Important?

Sustainability begins by recognising that the world is an exhaustible resource and we must do all we can to protect it by opting for eco-friendly materials and recycling where possible. Practicing sustainability starts by making ethical choices such as reducing waste and energy consumption. There are three main pillars of sustainability: social, economic and environmental

Have a look at a few reasons why aluminium doors are sustainable and beneficial for the environment.

Low Carbon Footprint

One of the main benefits of aluminium doors is that they have a very low carbon footprint. Aluminium is often recycled and, as a result, utilises less of the world’s resources while also allowing energy savings in production. In fact, it is calculated that the energy used to produce aluminium frames is three times less than the energy savings that could be achieved in just one year of use!

High Thermal Performance

As central heating consumes by far the largest proportion of household energy use, reducing this factor is one of the most efficient ways for homeowners to minimize their energy bills and improve their carbon footprint simultaneously. Opting for energy-efficient doors can help homeowners to significantly reduce the reliance on their central heating system. Aluminium doors have a high thermal performance, making them a sustainable and eco-friendly choice for any property.

Thermal transmittance, commonly known as the U-value of a product, measures the rate of heat loss through a material. The lower the U-value is, the better a material’s thermal resistance.

High Durability

Despite being a light-weight material, aluminium is still very strong and durable. Aluminium is naturally resistant to common pollutants which gives the material a much longer lifespan than alternatives such as uPVC, even through the most extreme weather conditions.

Due to aluminium’s corrosion-resistant qualities, it will not rust either – which makes it an incredibly low-maintenance material, saving money and resources on upkeep.

Easily Recyclable

Aluminium is 100% recyclable, that’s why it is often referred to as a ‘green metal’. Its recyclability helps to save a huge amount of resources and energy that is otherwise needed to produce aluminium from raw materials.

The raw material used to make aluminium is called bauxite. In the process of manufacturing aluminium from raw materials, bauxite is crushed, mixed with water and then melted at 950°C to produce liquid aluminium. This process is highly intensive. However, when aluminium is produced this way, it has two sustainability benefits. One, it is very durable so it can last much longer than alternative materials without needing to be replaced. Secondly, aluminium is fully recyclable, so once it is produced it can be repeatedly recycled without any loss of quality.

High Quality Double Glazing

Double glazing improves sustainability because it effectively reduces the transfer of heat – the insulating gas in the void between the panes prevents heat from passing through. Simply put, this keeps your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter for reduced energy usage.

Natural Light

When you install aluminium doors, you will also increase the amount of natural light in your home. Maximizing natural light reduces energy consumption and lowers carbon footprint. Natural light enhances well-being, mood, and productivity. It fosters a connection with the outdoors, promoting a sense of harmony with nature. Optimal natural lighting improves visual comfort and overall aesthetic appeal. If you are interested in the benefits of aluminium doors and how they will help you with your home, get in touch with our friendly team today.
